Canberra 2021

Stromlo Forest Park, on the western fringe of Canberra, is a world-class multi-use, recreational sporting facility which boasts a purpose built event pavilion, criterium cycling circuit, grass cross country running track, equestrian tracks and mountain bike tracks to suit any level of rider.

Through the 1980s and 1990s, the undeveloped forests of Mt Stromlo were where ‘Deek’ and many other Australian and International running greats did much of their training. In 2003, the entire forest was destroyed in bushfires which also claimed the lives of four Canberrans. Deek was one of the 500 families who lost everything in those fires and was a key member on the ACT Government’s Bushfire Recovery Taskforce.

Emerging from the ashes, the Stromlo Forest Park facility was one of Deek’s ideas; to not just replace what had been lost, but to make it better and to leave a legacy for future generations. Stromlo Forest Park has become one of Australia’s best and most sought after dedicated off road running and cycling venues.

Deek worked with the ACT Government on the Recovery Task Force, and was integral in the initial idea, and the development of a dedicated Cross-Country running facility at the Stromlo Forest Park facility. The world class facility is now established and he continues to be committed to ensuring that it is used by the ACT community and all local, national and international runners.

After construction finished in 2005, Stromlo Forest Park now boasts a one-of-a-kind recreational facility with a world-class cross country grassed running track, alongside a cycling criterion track and mountain trails perfect for off-road running and mountain biking.

A recent addition to the precinct is the Stromlo Leisure Centre, Canberra’s newest health and leisure facility, that includes:

  • Indoor Heated Olympic Pool
  • Indoor Heated Program Pool
  • Splash Park for the kids
  • Ultra-Modern Gym
  • Impressive Café

The Stromlo Forest Park is just a ten-minute drive from the city.
